Chancellor’s Report on Philanthropy

May 2026

Dear Seawolves,

This spring, our community came together in a powerful demonstration of what it means to support student success at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½. Giving Day remains the one time each year when we ask our entire community — alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends — to invest in the future of our students. The response this year was inspiring and impactful.

Together, 2,084 donors contributed an extraordinary $452,974 in just 49 hours. These gifts were amplified by the generosity of 57 donors who provided $200,000 in matching gifts and challenge funds, multiplying the impact of every contribution.

Among the most notable of these commitments were:

  • A $30,000 two-for-one match from the George and Stephanie Suddock Foundation in support of the Student Support Fund
  • A $20,000 two-for-one match from Cynthia and Dave Schraer for the Goss Nurses Student Support Center
  • A $15,000 challenge from the 5th Line, unlocked when 125 donors supported ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Hockey Excellence
  • A $10,000 challenge from Gary and Jane Klopfer, unlocked when 30 alumni gave to any fund within the College of Business and Public Policy

This year, Giving Day spotlighted the Student Support Fund, which provides critical assistance to students facing unexpected financial hardships. Each semester, students encounter unforeseen challenges that threaten to derail their education. Through referrals to the ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ Care Team, we are able to respond — but the need continues to outpace available resources. This is why Giving Day matters.

Every dollar given to the Student Support Fund turns generosity into immediate, life-changing support. One student, upon learning of this year’s focus, shared a message with our development team: “I am one of those students who is grateful for the help I received. I look forward to being one of your success stories next year.â€

We also saw inspiring examples of student leadership in action. Our gymnastics team, while traveling, gathered in a hotel lobby and spent hours reaching out to friends and family in support of Giving Day. Motivated by a challenge to secure the most donors to a fund, they rallied an incredible 650 donors to the Gymnastics Excellence Fund, earning an additional $2,500 for their program. These student-athletes understand the importance of philanthropic support, and their efforts reflect a deep commitment to sustaining excellence at ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½.

Giving Day is a reminder that it takes a community to support our students. Every gift — no matter the size — represents a belief in our students’ potential and the role ÀÖ²¥´«Ã½ plays in transforming lives across Alaska.

I extend my sincere gratitude to all who participated in this year’s Giving Day. Your generosity ensures that when students face challenges, they are not alone. Instead, they are supported by a community that champions their success.

Together, we are creating opportunity, removing barriers and building a stronger future for Alaska.

With warm regards,

Cheryl Siemers
